The City of Montreal
Located in Quebec, Montreal is the largest city in the province, and the second-largest in the country of Canada. The city is suitably located on the Island of Montreal.
In 2011, the population of Montreal was about 1,600,000 people. To bring that into perspective, the current population of the city was about one-twelfth of Canada`s entire population in the 1940s.

Montreal is a very cosmopolitan, sophisticated, erudite, educated, glorious city today. But it wasn't quite that way when I was growing up there. There was a lot of anti-Semitism. And I had to deal with that in an area of the city that had very few Jews.
The quote above gives an idea of what Duddy went through as he was growing up. These words were spoken by William Shatner, a famous actor and film director. Duddy is Jewish, so he would have certainly understood what Shatner was saying. The amount of anti-Semitism was high in the 1940s; Duddy grew up right during the middle of it all.
